About Michaels Development
For over 35 years, Michaels has been a national leader in the private sector development of affordable housing. Our employees have a wealth of real estate expertise — in land use planning, design, construction, finance, and the law.
We are not only real estate developers, but, more importantly, advocates for affordable housing. Each of us brings our unique backgrounds and experiences in the public, private and non-profit sectors together to achieve a common goal — producing livable, affordable residential communities.
Our Mission
Our mission at the Michaels Development Company is to create attractive residential communities for families and senior citizens of all income levels that stand the test of time. We believe in long term investment. Many of the communities developed in past decades are still owned by our affiliates. Therefore, top quality design and construction is vitally important to us.
History of the Michaels Development Company
The roots of the Michaels Development Company trace back to the 1950s and '60s, when our founder, Michael J. Levitt, first became involved in single family, multifamily and nursing home development. As a co-founder of Soble Construction Company of Atlantic City, New Jersey, Mr. Levitt developed more than 20 multifamily communities, located primarily in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
In 1973, Mr. Levitt formed the Michaels Development Company. In its initial decades, Michaels Development focused on the production of federally-subsidized, rental housing.
The company has increasingly turned its attention to creating mixed-income communities for both renters and homeowners. We are now recognized as a leader in both affordable and mixed income residential development.
In 1973, Mr. Levitt also started the Interstate Realty Management Company (www.irmmgmt.com). In addition to communities developed by the Michaels organization, Interstate manages properties for private investors and public agencies on a fee basis. The company is a nationally recognized sponsor of resident programs and has won several "Quality of Life" awards for its supportive services.
Other affiliated companies overseen by Mr. Levitt include: Continental Mortgage Corp., an in-house FHA approved mortgage lender/servicer; Affordable Housing Equity Partners, LLC, which seeks tax-saving opportunities for investors through syndication; Michaels Military Housing (MMH), whose sole focus is developing, managing and maintaining best in class communities for our soldiers and their families, and the Michaels Building Corp., which monitors new construction and property rehabilitation for many of the properties developed, owned or managed by the Michaels organization.
